The Czech Republic is the traditional crossroads of Europe, and the Czech people are among the most open-minded in central Europe. When the Czech Republic gained its freedom from communist rule after years of struggle, it proudly elected a poet, Vaclav Havel, as its first president. This romantic country is renowned for its support of writers, artists, and the bohemian lifestyle. The country is culturally and historically rich, with countless religious monuments, museums, catacombs and even underground tank factories used by the Nazis during WWII.

Prague is a magical, liberal, buzzing city, with diverse districts offering lots of different experiences. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, packed with theatres, restaurants, parks, galleries and museums. The city is famous for its nightlife, and visitors come from all over Europe to party in Prague. Outside of the historic capital of Prague, you’ll find a countryside full of farms and forests, villages and castles, incredibly scenic, with treetop walks, wetlands, caves, ice climbing, and mountain tourism. Hiking, skiing and vineyards across the country will remind you of more famous touristy destinations – why not check it out soon?

AFS students live with host families and attend local schools, called gymnasiums, which prepare students for further academic education. High school in the Czech Republic is a challenging yet rewarding experience.
