At any time of year, you can take part in plenty of outdoor activities in Grand Haven. All of the city’s beaches are wonderful for sports and relaxation during warmer months, but you can also take in breathtaking lake views by strolling along Grand Haven’s famous boardwalk. If the sun gets too overbearing, there are plenty of forested areas with varying terrain to explore too. In winter, you can go skiing, sledding, or simply enjoy the town and its nature transforming under snowfall. This city is also a perfect place to add to a scenic Michigan road trip route, thanks to its placement at the start (or end) of the West Michigan Pike historic byway.

Keep the sandy adventures going at Kitchel-Lindquist Dunes Preserve. The sand dunes here are uniquely mixed in with the forests, providing the park’s visitors with plenty of hiking trails. The Kitchel Lindquist Dunes Preserve Loop takes you through six different ecosystems in just one two-and-a-half mile trail. With minimal elevation gain, this trail is perfect for hikers of all experience levels. Slightly south of Grand Haven is Rosy Mound Natural Area, featuring more dunes, but with towering trees reaching straight up to the sky and slightly more advanced hiking trails. However, you’ll be rewarded with wide, seemingly untouched views of Lake Michigan.
During colder months, Grand Haven turns into a winter wonderland, especially at Mulligan’s Hollow. Across six slope options, this locally owned nonprofit caters to all skill levels, making it great for families. Parents even receive free admission. Check the event calendar for sledding and freestyle trick competitions. If you don’t want to participate, you might have just as much fun as a spectator. There are also adults-only events and rental equipment of all sizes.
