Slovenia, in Central Europe, is known for its mountains, ski resorts and lakes. On Lake Bled, a glacial lake fed by hot springs, the town of Bled contains a church-topped islet and a cliffside medieval castle. In Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital, baroque facades mix with the 20th-century architecture of native Jože Plečnik, whose iconic Tromostovje (Triple Bridge) spans the tightly curving Ljubljanica River.

Alongside the majority population of Slovenian ethnic origin, in the border areas there live Hungarian and Italian minority communities. Slovenians would describe themselves as hard-working, diligent and active people, individualists who speak foreign languages well. They are proud of their culture and language, well educated and open to difference.

In general Slovenes eat a lot of meat, vegetables, pasta and pastries. Vegetarians are accepted by many host families if they also eat dairy products; vegans are very difficult to place and students should consider switching to an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet while on the program. Allergies to special food products are also acceptable.
